ESA President op-ed: the First Amendment is no game
Get SCOTUS updates & Defend your rights
ESA President Michael Gallagher's latest op-ed piece is making waves around the web.
The article, published in the Baltimore Sun, calls the California game law a violation of free speech that is based on false science and faulty reasoning.
He rebukes the California law's central tenet — that there exists a causal link between video games and violence:
Leading U.S. government authorities such as the surgeon general, the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission have also acknowledged that no scientific research validates this causal link.
Throughout the history of the Supreme Court, freedom of speech has never been restricted because of violent content. Moreover, similar attempts to pass gaming laws have been struck down by twelve different federal judges.
